Setting Up Tracking and Auto-Tagging with the ValueTrack Template
To properly track your Google Ads campaigns with WhatConverts, you need to set up two key components: auto-tagging and tracking templates. This setup ensures that WhatConverts can capture detailed campaign attribution data for every lead generated from your Google Ads.
Enable Auto-Tagging
Auto-tagging automatically adds Google Click IDs (GCLIDs) to your destination URLs when someone clicks on your ads, enabling precise tracking back to specific campaigns, ad groups, and keywords.
- Sign into your Google Ads account.
- Click "Admin" in the left menu. Select "Account Settings".
- Click "Auto-Tagging" and check the box for "Tag the URL that people click through from my ad". Click "Save".
Add Account-Level Tracking Template
ValueTrack tracking templates add additional marketing data to your ad clicks using Google's built-in parameters. These templates can be added at account, campaign, or ad level, with more specific levels taking precedence.
- Sign into your Google Ads account.
- Click "Admin" in the left menu. Select "Account Settings".
- Click "Tracking". Under Tracking template, add the following inside the text box:
{lpurl}?campaign={campaignid}&content={creative}&keyword={keyword}
- Click "Save".
Important Notes
Tracking Template Hierarchy:
- Account level applies the tracking template to all campaigns and ads within the account
- Campaign level applies the tracking template to all ads under the campaign (takes precedence over account level)
- Ad level applies the tracking template to individual ads (takes precedence over account and campaign level)
Additional Considerations:
- If tracking template is added at the campaign or ad level, the Final URL suffix can override the tracking template
- For more information on ValueTrack parameters, see Google Ads' Help article: About ValueTrack Parameters
With both auto-tagging and tracking templates properly configured, WhatConverts will be able to capture comprehensive attribution data for all your Google Ads traffic, helping you understand which campaigns, keywords, and ads are driving your most valuable leads.
